Hey Mike - so I've been thinking about that 'rubbing the cat fur the wrong way' thing I was banging on about at the crit today - so running some opposing signal or message against the images you're putting on screen for ironic effect. I think there is an argument for a juxtaposition here - so we have the iconic characters on screen 'breaking their respective moulds' - at the same time as we're hearing contrary expectations... I came across this publication that is in the public domain - i.e. it doesn't come with any copyright issues:
The ladies book of etiquette and Manual of Politeness - essentially a guide on how women should behave in social and domestic situations:
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/35123
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9N37sLYUK8
I can imagine a version of your film wherein readings from these kinds of 'manuals for women' are juxtaposed with the role-breaking happening on screen? Does that make sense?
